Rizzle Kicks debut album ‘Stereo Typical’and live dates

It was Popjustice who recently wrote, “Here’s something one doesn’t really think about much, until one day you notice it and you can’t unremember it: popstars do have a habit of making things looks like such hard work. The Thing About Rizzle Kicks is that they make it all look very easy.”And, it’s hard to disagree. In just a few short months Jordan and Harley have had a top 10 hit with ‘Down With The Trumpets’ (selling over 250,000 singles), reached the top of the charts with Olly Murs, supported Dizzee Rascal and The Streets in concert, headlined the BBC Introducing Stage at Reading/Leeds, recorded with Fatboy Slim, featured on this year’s Children In Need single and been nominated for 3 MOBO awards…! With a rare combination of talent, charisma and foresight – especially at such a young age – Rizzle Kicks are doing things on their own terms, and winning. In fact it wasn’t so long ago that Jordan and Harley were at school together (they’ve known each other since they were toddlers), spending their free time writing songs, unofficially remixing their favourite records, creating videos with friends and generally just having fun and uploading it all onto YouTube. “Initially we just saw YouTube as a way of our friends checking what we’d been up to, but then we started getting more and more plays on everything we’d stick up” explains Harley. “Yeah, it was all very relaxed at first but it was clear that more people were becoming aware of Rizzle Kicks from YouTube and when we started being contacted by music industry types, we could tell something was working.” Jordan adds. But neither Jordan nor Harley could have predicted what was going to happen in such a short space of time. Following a number of emails and calls with their now managers (who like many others found them via YouTube), Rizzle Kicks soon had representation and within just a few months had signed an exclusive deal with Island Records. Although even then the expectation remained low, Jordan continues, “it was amazing to sign with Island, so many of our favourite musicians – legends! – have been signed to the label but from the start there was no pressure on us to do anything really quickly. But we had already written ‘Trumpets’ and had a video for it, so we all just decided to go for it.” And “go for it” they did. Embodying the spirit of early De La Soul and Tribe Called Quest with the British cheekiness and pop sensibility of Lily Allen and The Arctic Monkeys, Rizzle Kicks officially arrived at the party in summer 2011 and ‘Down With The Trumpets’ was the vehicle that dropped them off. Although – and anyone who’s seen their live show this summer will agree – there’s a lot more to be excited about than just their hit single. Spread across 14-tracks ‘Stereo Typical’ shows exactly why Island have put so much faith in the duo, as Jordan and Harley draw on all their influences to find the perfect balance between pop and hip-hop. Call it whatever you like, it’s immediate, infectious and a whole load of fun – in fact we challenge you not to nod your head and shake–your–rump-ahh. Starting with the euphoric ‘Dreamers’, the pairing of Jordan’s rhyme flow with Harley’s soft vocal chords shines brightly as it jumps straights into the next single ‘When I Was A Youngster’. As the LP develops, the new, unheard tracks such as ‘Roundup’, ‘Demolition Man’ and ‘Travellers Chant’ stand tall alongside the already known anthems such as ‘Trumpets’, ‘Prophet’, ‘Miss Cigarette’ and Fatboy Slim produced ‘Mama Do The Hump’. The second half of the LP see’s their Brighton hip-hop roots further embraced, with live favourite ‘Stop With The Chatter’ and new cuts ‘Trouble’ and ‘Even On A Rainy Day’ giving a nod to the old school. ‘Home Wrecker’ and ‘Learn My Lesson’ complete the new album tracks, bringing things back to the now and further showcasing the talent that is Rizzle Kicks. In June they promised to bring this year’s “inner sound” as we enter the D.A.I.S.Y. age mark 2. On October 31st they deliver on their promise.
