Macy Gray "Covered" & Live Dates at the Jazz Cafe

Grammy award winning, 15 million album selling, singer-songwriter Macy Gray, one of the most unique and original artists to emerge in recent times, has her new album “Covered”, a collection of all new recordings of songs handpicked and reinterpreted by the US star in her own inimitable fashion, has been released. To coincide with the release of the album Macy plays two sell-out nights at London’s Jazz Café on June 27th and June 28th. Produced by Hal Willner (Lou Reed, Metallica), “Covered” tackles material largely drawn from the indie scene from the last decade—interpretations Macy’s fans will be familiar with as she’s been performing them live over the years. Featured tracks include Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up” or My Chemical Romance’s “Teenagers” which Gray subversively overhauls into something wholly her own. Also included are tracks by Radiohead, Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well as short skits featuring J.B. Smoove, Nicole Scherzinger and a guest appearance by Idris Elba. In addition Macy has just wrapped filming with director Lee Daniels (Precious) for his forthcoming film ‘The Paperboy” which also stars John Cusack, Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Matthew McConaughey. Since her dazzling debut introduced this singular talent to the masses, Macy has forged an uncompromising musical path beholden to her own vision. With “COVERED” Macy aims to turn the cover album concept on its ear choosing contemporary choices and approaching them in an innovative and uncompromising way. Not surprising considering she’s spent her career defying expectations and stretching musical boundaries. Says Macy on being inspired by Nina Simone’s cover songs: “She didn’t worry about what people would think or how they would compare it to anybody else. I saw how she just took that song and every song she ever did and made them her own. So I went in with the confidence that we could do whatever we wanted.”

"Exciting young emcee", Mac Miller releases new single ‘Party On Fifth Ave’

Fresh from his sold out UK tour, including a London show at The Forum last month, Mac Miller releases his new anthemic single ‘Party On Fifth Ave’ on July 23rd, the second release from his debut album ‘Blue Slide Park’. Mac, one of the most exciting young emcee’s of the moment continues to give a nod to old skool hip hop. With over 11 million views on YouTube, ‘Party On Fifth Ave’ samples DJ Kool’s classic ‘Let Me Clear My Throat’, or depending on your generation, DJ Mark the 45 King’s ‘The 900 Number’.Only six months into the year and Mac Miller has already worked with a slew of massive names. Earlier this year he dropped ‘Macadelic’, the seventh mixtape of his career, which features cuts from the likes of Kendrick Lamar and Lil’ Wayne. He also delivered an outstanding verse on the remix of Justin Bieber’s new single ‘Boyfriend’. Not to forget his forthcoming EP, ‘Pink Slime’, a collaboration with Neptunes legend Pharrell Williams. Still only 20 years old, in his early teens Miller began to take his influences from the likes of A Tribe Called Quest, Big L, and Outkast, which helped him develop a reputation for delivering jaw-dropping freestyles in his native Pittsburgh. Keeping true to his backpacker style, Mac Miller was signed independently to Rostrum Records, also home to Wiz Khalifa, in 2011, ‘Blue Slide Park’ became the first independently distributed debut album to top the US charts in 15 years. Like most of his contemporaries, he first came to prominence by dropping a host of mixtapes. It was with ‘K.I.D.S’ and ‘Best Day Ever’, released 2010 and 2011 respectively, that Mac really rose from local sensation to online phenomenon, with each of his music videos clocking views by the millions on YouTube (over 320 million plays on his channel), and his hustle earning the respect of the industry.

After a breakthrough start to the year, Angel, aka Sirach Charles is set to continue onwards and upwards as he gears up to release brand new single 'Wonderful' on July 29th. With fans ranging from Michael Kiwanuka through to Cheryl Cole, Angel, once dubbed the UK R&B/Pop's biggest secret has effortlessly made the transition into one of its most promising new assets on the rise collecting the coveted accolades of HMV's Next Big Thing and MTV's Brand New Award nominations along the way. Highlights also include Angel’s debut release ‘Go In, Go Hard’ featuring Wretch 32 being announced as the title track to successful independent British film Streetdance 2 in addition to it notching up over 1 million YouTube views, supporting Dappy on his nationwide sell out tour, and selling out his own headline show (that sold out within 2 hours of being announced). At only 24 years old and hailing from Shepherds Bush, Londoner Angel has many strings to his bow; a singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist whose music is a wonderful fusion of UK urban sound with the smooth finesse of mid-90's R&B, simultaneously modern but with a nod to those who have influenced him (from Prince and Michael Jackson though to Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis). Angel has been a firm favourite on the underground scene for quite some time now thanks to a handful of well received mixtapes and EP’s including ‘Any Minute Now’ and  ‘7 Minutes Before Time’ featuring Wretch 32, Giggs and Wiley (among others) and undeniable online presence (YouTube channel on over a million views and counting). Three years ago, in partnership with his brother Kassa, Angel started a production company called Parallel Music. In spite of the serving an eight month stretch in prison on remand, (he was found not guilty on all charges), Angel quickly took Parallel music from strength to strength. Penning hits for Pixie Lott, Jason Derulo and a #1 single for Roll Deep. Due to his vast catalogue of hit records, a publishing deal was soon signed with Universal. Six months later, after an undeniable ever-growing underground buzz, Angel was signed to Island Records as an artist. Fast-forward to 2012 and Angel shows no signs of slowing down. Forthcoming single ‘Wonderful’ has won over support from none other than Ed Sheeran who has branded it as ‘an amazing record’. ‘Wonderful’ is an up tempo track with heavy innovative synths; a cool slice of R&B pop with an incredibly crowd-rousing chorus ready to set the festivals alight this summer as he graces the stages of Wireless and V Festival.

"Sound System" marks 50 YEARS OF JAMAICAN INDEPENDENCE

To mark the 50th anniversary of Jamaican independence Island Records are releasing a huge box set entitled ‘Sound System – The Story Of Jamaican Music’ on June 25th. ‘Sound System’ will feature 8 CDs of glorious music and a deluxe hard backed book by acclaimed writer Chris Salewicz (author of biographies of Bob Marley, Joe Strummer and ‘Rude Boy – Once Upon A Time In Jamaica’) and featuring hundreds of photos by legendary photographer Adrian Boot. Compiled by Ramus (musical factotum at Chris Blackwell-era Island, Mango and Palm Pictures) and Paul ‘Groucho’ Smykle (dub producer who’s worked with PiL, Grace Jones, David Bowie, Jah Wobble, BAD and many more), ‘Sound System’ features 120 songs randomly programmed to ape the way a Sound System DJ might select his set on any given night. It features a wonderfully eclectic mix of R&B, mento, ska, blue beat, reggae, dub and funk and celebrates the incredible musical gift this small island has given to the world. When it comes to music and sport Jamaica certainly punches above its weight! Sound System culture first took hold in Kingston Jamaica in the 50s when local promoters would load up a truck with huge speakers and a turntable, and DJs would play the latest sounds at street parties. In order to attract the crowds the Sound System DJs were in bitter competition to play the latest, rarest cuts from the biggest artists of the day. The best could attract thousands and it developed into a hugely profitable business which thrives to this day. ‘Sound System’ is a snapshot of Jamaican culture, the soundtrack you would hear on jukeboxes, ghetto blasters and on every radio station if you drove across Jamaica. From Althea & Donna’s global hit ‘Uptown Top Ranking’ to Eric Donaldson’s ‘Cherry O Baby’ via Augustus Pablo’s peerless ‘King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown’ and The Royals’ ‘Free Speech And Movement’ there’s something for everyone here.
