Record-making Cov-19 'One Love' Auction raises £179,755 for NHS Charities Together & Feeding America

Island Records is proud to announce that their One Love Covid-19 Relief Auction in support of NHS Charities Together & Feeding America, has raised the fantastic sum of £179,755. Hosted by the inimitable Emmy®, Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning actor, singer, director, composer and playwright Billy Porter, the auction comprised incredible lots and one-of-a-kind donations from Island artists old and new as well as friends of the label.

The U2 lot, featuring Bono’s signed and hand-written lyrics for ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’, sold for a staggering £76,000, believed to be a world record for U2 lyrics. There was also a last-minute addition to the auction with a truly unique one-off lot from Brian Eno. Eno offered up a personal one-of-a-kind ringtone composed by him. The response from media and the public alike has been unbelievable with almost 800 people registered to bid and over 3,250 bids during the hour-long live broadcast.

Speaking about the auction Island Records President Louis Bloom says: “I’d like to thank all our amazing artists, our US counterparts at Island US and Republic, all our media partners, Omega Auctions and every last member of the Island team who have worked tirelessly to get this auction together in such a short space of time. I’d also like to thank every person who bid on these amazing lots or made a donation, you have made a difference and all the money we raised will aid Covid-19 relief & go direct to NHS Charities Together and Feeding America. We are living through very challenging times and to be able to come together, like we have this week, and to help those in need, has been a real honour”.

Moby Rich teams up with Bishop Briggs on new single "friends"

Alt-pop duo Moby Rich enlists multiplatinum-selling star Bishop Briggs for their new single, ‘friends*’. The pair—Maxwell Joseph and Connor Pledger—relocated to LA from Indianapolis and Atlanta in search of, well, anything. In a moment of synergy, Connor began attending open mic nights around the town in which Maxwell was living. The pair serendipitously met, began writing together, and realised an identifiable sound between the two them. Writing the majority of their tracks on acoustic guitar, they sing every song in unison, a sort of whole-is-greater-than-the-sum-of-parts attitude, which speaks volumes of their close, almost twin-like, friendship.

Listen to ‘friends*: HERE

Of the collaboration with Bishop Briggs, Moby Rich says, “When we wrote ‘friends*’ with Bishop, it was our first time meeting her. Sometimes sessions have a way of just giving you a song, and the second we started writing, the words and melodies just started to flow. It’s pretty wild when we get to work with people that we’ve heard on the radio so many times. It’s also nice when they are super chill and wholly authentic.”

Bishop Briggs says “‘friends*’ describes the frustrating yet beautiful cycle of disappointment, hope, bliss, chaos, addiction and love. Wanting something you can’t have can be very alluring and can consume your every thought. I had been singing ‘I hate that I want to be more than friends’ when I was briefly reminded of a guy friend of mine who I previously felt that way for. I was reminded of all the moments I looked far too deeply into and the memories I replayed in my mind in the hopes of us being something more. I am a big fan of Moby Rich, and I reached out to them directly to see if they would have any interest in writing! Thankfully, they were up for it.”

“friends*” follows Moby Rich’s latest release “Get High”—listen to the song HERE and watch the video HERE! The Los Angeles-based duo recently announced they will join Weathers on their “Our Little Secret” North American tour later this year. Moby Rich has amassed over 30 million-plus streams to date and received praise from Billboard, Funny Or Die, Noisey, Alt Press, Ones To Watch and more.

FLYTE RELEASE STUNNING NEW SINGLE ‘EASY TIGER’ VIDEO DIRECTED BY BAFTA-WINNER MARK JENKIN

During a particularly raw period of time; lead singer of Flyte Will Taylor recorded a 20-minute voice-note about a painful breakup, as a warning to himself to “buckle up and get ready for a really shit time”. New single ‘Easy Tiger’ was born, a startlingly frank yet beautifully poignant song, recorded over a few days in LA with producer Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Ariel Pink) and Ali Chant (Aldous Harding) on mixing duties. ‘Easy Tiger’ immediately caught the attention of Mark Jenkin, the BAFTA-winning British director (Bait) of Bullion Productions. During quarantine, Will and Mark started work on a music video, Mark’s trademark use of hand-processed and physically edited film serving as the perfect solution to the current limitations of film making during COVID-19. ‘Easy Tiger’ is the first music video Mark has directed.
“The challenge was to make something that felt amorphous – to create something that has a tactile feel to it, is a single artefact, something that feels like a found film and something that is timeless, abstract and unidentifiable in some ways. For me, what’s exciting is those limitations – this is where my strength is, the great unknown.” – Says Mark

“When I wrote Easy Tiger I was exorcising shame, heartbreak, jealously; almost impossible emotions to process, I almost regretted writing it. There’s a darkness and an emotional brashness to Mark’s work that suited the song perfectly. It would have been hard to trust anyone else with it.” – Says Will.
Last year, the three secondary school friends from Winchester; Will Taylor, Jon Supran and Nick Hill released their ‘White Roses EP’, featuring a stunning collaboration from The Staves, with production from long-time collaborator Burke Reid (Courtney Barnett, Julia Jacklin) and Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, The National). The band welcomed Jess Stavely Taylor of the Staves to play with them at their Omeara and Village Underground headlines, adding a whole new dimension to their trademark vocal harmonies. The EP release was followed by an extensive US tour with Jade Bird, where the band recorded covers from artists linked to American cities from Nashville to Chicago; Judy Collins to Elliot Smith, which they have reposted as odes to live music during quarantine; “Almost every state had an artist we truly loved who was from there," Will said in a recent interview with Evening Standard.
Flyte are renowned for their complex and rich vocal arrangements and melodies, with lyrics steeped in literary imagery; The Sunday Times calling their acclaimed debut record The Loved Ones “The Best British debut album of the year,” but it was touring in California that recently took hold of their imagination. Inspired by their time in Laurel Canyon, the band recorded their next full-length record in LA. A much-needed new environment to confront the personally challenging subject matter written back home in London, and an opportunity to work with some of their musical heroes.

Sports Team release new single and video for 'Going Soft'. Debut Album 'Deep Down Happy' out soon

Ahead of the release of their highly anticipated debut album Deep Down Happy on 19 June, Sports Team today share new single and video for ‘Going Soft’, reminding us about the euphoric highs of live music – albeit from a screen – filmed by friends and fans over the last year of the pandemonium of life on the road.

The six-piece have built a large, fiercely loyal and fervent fanbase; coming up on the back of word of mouth live hype, drawing round the block queues to early gigs at The Five Bells and Moth Club, and celebrating a Kentish Town Forum headline at the end of last year. ‘Going Soft’ captures the essence of a band waiting to get back out there doing what they love, and what they do best.

Sports Team are a band of six singular characters, who have been described as one of the most raucous, electrifying and chaotic acts in the UK. Here’s The Thing, the first single lifted from their debut album was chosen as Greg James’ Track Of The Week, following an Annie Mac Hottest Record and BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music playlist. Their debut album Deep Down Happy, 12 scabrous vignettes about the trials and tribulations, the hopes and the dreams, of young Brits, will be released on 19 June 2020 on Island Records.

A now pertinent album title, the songs on Deep Down Happy are sharply drawn pen portraits of small-town torments, inequality and ultimately escapism. Documenting modern Britain in all its messy complexity, the album is a succession of vivid snapshots of the follies, foibles and frustrations of youth. Sports Team calls to mind a loving but fractious family, bickering one minute, weeping with laughter the next. The bands album Instore tour will be moved to a later date due to the unprecedented circumstances.

“It’s a short history of the last two years really, ending with the last show before all this happened at our local, The Nags Head. Hopefully the whole thing is a reminder of how good live music can be, that if you’re a kid who should be going to their first show about now then live music isn’t an acoustic cover on IG Live, it’s something really special.” Alex Rice, Sports Team
