Irish star Hozier’s global hit Take Me To Church has been announced as 2014’s most streamed track of the year. This morning Spotify announced the song as their global number 1 most shared song on the service in 2014, and the biggest song in the world at this moment. It follows confirmation that Take Me To Church had already topped their global chart (with over 87 million streams to date), and further cements the young Wicklow musician as the first tangible example of a breakthrough streaming superstar. The track currently sits at 1 on the Shazam worldwide chart. At the turn of this year, the video to Take Me To Church had quickly gone viral, and now sits with over 40 million views on YouTube. It caps a hugely successful, breakthrough year for Andrew Hozier-Byrne, having picked up his first Grammy nomination this month for Song of the Year, and debuting his critically acclaimed eponymous album at number 2 in the US Billboard chart (the second biggest debut album of the year), number 5 in the UK, and enjoying five weeks at number 1 in his native Ireland. To date, Hozier has sold-out all his headline shows across the globe and will headline two nights at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire in January, a little over one year from headlining the 100-capacity Troubadour in Earls Court back in January 2014. The debut album, ‘Hozier’, is out now through Rubyworks/Island Records. Watch Take Me To Church here

Ben Howard releases his new album, I Forget Where We Were

I Forget Where We Were was produced by Ben’s drummer Chris Bond at Start Point Farm Studios in Devon, and follows the huge success of his million selling, Mercury Prize nominated debut album, Every Kingdom, in 2011. In 2013, Ben capped a fantastic two years, by picking up two Brit Awards for British Breakthrough and British Solo Male Artist. A dark, dramatic return, I Forget Where We Were was recorded almost completely live, and its rawness matches the emotion of Ben’s words and vocal. It’s a bold, uncompromising listen and an incredibly assured body of work by one of Britain’s most successful young musicians of recent years.

Hozier the debut album and single 'Take Me To Church'

Hozier releases his debut, eponymous album on 6th October 2014 through Rubyworks/Island Records. It is preceded by a new single, Take Me To Church, on the 15th September 2014. It is only when you stumble across a songwriter whose lyrics both sound and read like poetry that you realise just what you are missing out on the rest of the time. When those lyrics are set to music that balances burning indignation with lilting tenderness, and delivered in a voice imbued with the spiritual passion and yearning of gospel and the blues, you figure you’ve chanced upon something pretty special. And so it is with Andrew Hozier-Byrne, a County Wicklow singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who goes by the name of Hozier, and whose way with words is a blessing (for us) as much as his susceptibility to romance, and romantic dreaming, sounds like a curse (for him). The vividness of his imagery speaks of a soul in thrall to, and beset by, intense and sometimes ungovernable emotions. Well, Amen to that, if it produces music as visceral as the material the 23-year-old writes. Raised in a musical family, and briefly a student of music at Trinity College Dublin (before his compulsion to write songs and share them with the world won the day over his studies), Hozier’s childhood and adolescent listening was dominated, he says, by his father’s record collection but particularly “by Chicago blues, Texan blues, Chess Records, Motown, and then I discovered jazz, but more importantly, Delta blues – that extraordinarily haunting sound, Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson, people like that. Later, it was Pink Floyd, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, plus Tom Waits was a huge, huge influence. I was always drawn to singers with something haunting about their voices. The same goes for writers such as James Joyce and Oscar Wilde. You can’t define what it is, but it buries itself deep in your soul.” Not surprisingly, lyrics matter hugely to Hozier. “For me, they are one of, if not the most, important factors in a song. That’s where the story is, and where the writer is, or should be. Lyrics are still the thing I take the longest over in my own songs, and work the hardest at – and care the most about. And also the thing I feel the most self-conscious about; you know, ‘Am I saying something worthwhile here?’” Reaction to the release last autumn in Ireland of Take Me to Church (released in the UK as a single on 15th September 2014), demonstrated that the answer to that question was an unqualified ‘Yes’. The fire-and-brimstone track – with an incendiary video to accompany it (6 million views and counting), directed by Brendan Canty and interlacing a storyline in which a homophobic lynch mob hunts down two gay men with footage of demonstrators in Russia protesting about president Putin’s recent anti-gay legislation – made a point that is not only worthwhile but, for Hozier, crucial. “The song was born of this idea that a child, when it is born, is born into sin. So, before you are a woman, or a gay man, just as a person, you are being undermined by the Catholic church as somebody who is sinful, as somebody who should be ashamed of yourself, and be begging for forgiveness. I wanted to use sex as a celebration of life; there are few things as human as the act of making love.” Although his parents are Catholic, Hozier was not raised in the Church. “My mum was brought up in that culture but was very opposed to it. I have some very strong opinions about its doctrine; in Ireland there has been a huge amount of abuse – of power, of women, of children. It’s a poisonous organisation. I wasn’t affected by it as a child, but as you get older, you become more and more aware of the hypocrisy, of the attitudes to women, of the homophobia.” On Take Me to Church, Hozier answered back, with a song about sexuality, freedom and humanity, whose lyrics capture the beguiling mix of conviction and mischief that so characterises his approach to songwriting. Elsewhere on the EP, he looked back on his first, crushing love affair, detailing it both as nostalgic chronicler and as if he was still within the relationship. It’s a devastating device: as the listener, you are witnessing his pain, his retrospective jealousy and his ongoing rapture, in the space of one song. So, on the pastoral, finger-picked Like Real People Do, as he sings: “Why were you digging? What did you bury, before those hands pulled me from the earth?”, we remember the potential for torment in speculating about a lover’s past. Cherry Wine, recorded on the roof of an abandoned hotel near Hozier’s home as the sun was rising, is similarly conflicted. “Calls of ‘Guilty’ thrown at me, all while she stains the sheets of some other” is a line shot through with anguish, and yet, musically, the song is as delicate and lulling as a warm summer breeze – a breeze that blows in the audible sound of the dawn chorus, enlisted as unwitting backing vocalist on the song. It is this constant contrast in Hozier’s work, between the sentiments expressed by the words and the music, that most sets him apart. Endearingly, he seems to have little sense of the power of what he writes. Rather, he wrestles, perpetually, with doubt, and with dilemmas. Respite only comes, he says, when he has just written a new song. “Love, and the loss of it, is something I’m still trying to get my head around – what it does to your identity, and what it means when it’s over. It begs the question, ‘Who are you?’, when it’s done. Are you the person you felt you were at the time, or the person you felt you were before that time? But at least I’m in the position where I can clear something off myself when that happens. Plus, when you write a song, it’s a hell of a lot easier to write the next one, because you can’t move on from something until you’ve dumped it onto somebody else, if that makes sense. The path is suddenly clearer.” From Eden, the title track from Hozier’s debut UK EP was written in one of those moments. “I’ll slither here from Eden,” he sings, “just to sit outside your door”, later picturing the object of his love with “a rope in hand, for your other man to hang from a tree.” Again, there is the sense of someone unable to decide, knowing the dangers, but drawn helplessly towards the rocks. Again, too, the music begs to differ; there is no torment here, as distant gospel voices join staccato jazz guitar, sonorous piano and rumbling bass in a spirit of celebration that speaks to one strand in the lyrics, but completely ignores the other. The effect of this duality is exhilarating. If he could just still that voice in his head, counselling caution one minute and wild abandon the next, Hozier might find some peace. But then he’d stop writing songs – and we’d stop being able to hear them. It seems a terribly cruel thing to say, but for our great benefit, if not for his, long may those fires rage.

Adam Cohen will release his new album ‘We Go Home’ on 15th Sept ’14 on the Cooking Vinyl label. We Go Home’, Cohen's fifth album, is a homemade affair. Since the band was playing in Europe, Adam decided to set up shop in the little white house on the Greek island of Hydra where he had spent much of his childhood. They continued recording in Montreal, where Adam was born, in the house where he spent his earliest years. "I knew I was painting a target on my back, making my album in the so-called homes of Leonard Cohen, but they're my homes too. These are the walls that saw me grow up the most and that I needed to come back to. My muse is my home". Some of the themes on ‘We Go Home’ continue the conversation that his 2011 album ‘Like A Man’ began. "I want the songs to speak for themselves", says Cohen, "but what I can say is that the songs on this record mostly chronicle conversations I’ve either had with my old man, or want to have with my boy", (his seven-year-old son Cassius), "and a few conversations I'm having with myself. And, of course, there are love songs." What's different is the tone—richer and fuller this time, more diverse, making the most of the three-piece band and three-piece string section from his tour. The nylon-string guitar is still there, but there are also piano songs - the title track's tenderness and self-mocking humour recalling one of Cohen's other great musical influences Randy Newman. "My last album was about me finally claiming my belonging to a tradition and finding my voice within that tradition. My new album," Adam Cohen states, "is about me raising my voice."
We Go Home is released on September 15th. The full tracklisting is:
  • 1. Song Of Me And You
  • 2. Too Real
  • 3. We Go Home
  • 4. Put Your Bags Down
  • 5. So Much To Learn
  • 6. Uniform
  • 7. Love Is
  • 8. What Kind Of Woman
  • 9. Fall Apart
  • 10. Swear I Was There
  • 11. Boats
Adam Cohen will appear with his band at London’s Bush Hall on 15th October 2014.
Adam Cohen released his eponymously titled debut in 1998 followed by a French language album ‘Melancolista’ in 2004, then as lead singer/guitarist of the band Low Millions he released the album ‘Ex-Girlfriends’ in 2004. His feted 2011 album ‘Like A Man’ earned him his first gold record in Canada and saw him tour the globe.
Adam Cohen/Pre-order We Go Home

“Adam Cohen is finally ready to follow in his dad’s footsteps…his new record is one truly fit to bear the family name... ‘Like A Man’ and ‘What Other Guy’ apply a probing diamond-sharp tip to the soft flesh of real relationships… ” SUNDAY TIMES “
’Like A Man’ is a little beauty, a perfectly turned collection of measured, poetic, introspective, funny, philosophical and deeply romantic songs exploring what it means to be a man in love, simply arranged around a picked nylon-string guitar and sung in a tender, melancholic voice.” DAILY TELEGRAPH “
The understated acoustic-based album has that confessional vibe of Len’s early classics…and dad has even described ‘What Other Guy’ and the title track as world-class love songs. Who am I to disagree?” THE SUN “
…with his fourth album (Adam Cohen) has gone up a division…the genre is confessional folk…candid, sensuous and precise…strong clear songs about modern love. 4 stars” MAIL ON SUNDAY “
Cohen sets about quiet rapprochement with his DNA, hence ‘Like A Man’ packs elegant poem-songs, nylon-string guitar and …serene half-spoken rumination… Cohen Junior’s best work to date.” MOJO

A Music Event 47 years in the making. Pre-order Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes

Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes (, a collaborative album project from Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) and producer T Bone Burnett, will be released 10th November on Electromagnetic Recordings/Island Records/Harvest Records. The album was recorded in March at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, where the artists and Burnett convened for two weeks to write and create music for a treasure trove of recently discovered lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes. Check out the lyric video for “Nothing To It” on Vevo which features Dylan’s actual handwritten lyrics inhabiting a surreal animated cityscape

Bob Dylan’s original Basement Tapes have fascinated and enticed successive generations of musicians, fans and cultural critics for nearly five decades. More than a hundred songs were recorded by Dylan and musicians who later became The Band in the basement of a small house in upstate New York in the summer and fall of 1967, including many Bob Dylan future classics such as, “I Shall Be Released,” “The Mighty Quinn,” “This Wheel’s On Fire,” “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” and “Tears Of Rage.” Lost On The River: The New Basement Tapes is a music event 47 years in the making. The album celebrates the discovery of never-seen Bob Dylan lyrics from that legendary 1967 period and marks a creative highpoint for the album’s participants - Burnett, Costello, Giddens, Goldsmith, James and Mumford – who have brought them to life nearly 50 years later. As Burnett explains, “What transpired during those two weeks was amazing for all of us. There was a deep well of generosity and support in the studio at all times, which reflected the tremendous trust and generosity shown by Bob in sharing these lyrics with us in the first place.”

Energetic and highly acclaimed synthpop trio, Prides, release Messiah on June 23

The band burst onto the scene with Out of the Blue which lived on the top five of the Hype Machine. They also enjoyed success on second single, The Seeds You Sow, which was met with rave reviews from fans and critics alike. Next up is Messiah, which is an infectious indie pop track that has a sense of impending bigness about it. And is set to be an anthem for this summer with it’s chant like repetitive vocals.

Singer, Stewart Brock says,The idea for the lead synth line came about because we were discussing that no one used a pitch bend on a keyboard anymore. Usually that’s an incentive for us to try something and it stuck. We had recently seen The Killers headline T in the Park and with that in mind we really wanted our own ‘I’ve got soul but I’m not a soldier’ moment. That was the inspiration.

The track is about love and self-doubt. It’s about wanting to achieve something, and realising that maybe you can’t do that alone. Admitting that maybe you need to throw yourself at the mercy of someone else, and ask them to be your Messiah.”

Fresh off a tour supporting RAC around the East Coast of America and a pit-stop at SXSW, they are a fantastic live band that own every venue they play. Their upcoming dates include:
25 April – Cambridge University, with Bipolar Sunshine
29 April – Old Queens Head, London
1 May – Liverpool Sound City, Liverpool
5 May – Beta All Day Event, Manchester
7 May – The Social, London
9 May – The Great Escape, Brighton
14 May – Scala, London (Saint Raymond support)
19 May – Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth (Foxes support)
20 May – Concorde 2, Brighton (Foxes support)
21 May – KOKO, London (Foxes support)
22 May – King Tuts, Glasgow
23 May – Leadmill, Sheffield (Foxes support)
24 May – Potterrow, Edinburgh (Foxes support)
27 May – HMV Institute Library, Birmingham (Foxes support)
29 May – East Village Arts Club, Liverpool (Foxes support)
30 May – King Tuts, Glasgow (Foxes support)
6 June – Club NME, KOKO
6 July – Barn on the Farm Festival

An addictive, dazzling track, electrifying live shows and a band with a voice, Prides are clearly a force to be reckoned with.

PHANTOGRAM ‘Voices’ Album Now Available Digitally + UK Tour Dates

Phantogram are Sarah Barthel (vocals, keyboard) and Josh Carter (vocals, guitar). They caused an impressive stir with the release of their debut album ‘Eyelid Movies’ in 2009 and follow-up EP ‘Nightlife’ (2011). Now they announce details of their highly anticipated sophomore full-length ‘Voices’, which is released on Island Records on June 30th and will be preceded by the wonderful single ‘Fall In Love’ on June 23rd. Since forming in Saratoga Springs in upstate New York, Phantogram have evolved their sound organically and gradually. The new album is an atmospheric melding of hazy dream pop and head-knocking rhythms which makes no concession to commercialism and stays ever true to the aesthetic that has won them a wide, devoted and disparate fan base. Drafted and written both back in Saratoga Springs and current hometown Brooklyn, where the duo build their compositions together around Carter’s often sample-heavy beats, it was finished with co-producer John Hill (MIA, Santigold) in LA. The division of labour between Sarah and Josh is unique – writing and producing sometimes together and also apart, immediate proximity was not a prerequisite in such a long-standing partnership.  Released in the US in February, ‘Voices’ is still making some serious waves over there. It peaked at #5 in iTunes Album chart and #11 in the main chart as America fully embraced the New York duo. The shows at this years’ SXSW were one of the highlights for many (named Buzzfeeds standout act after their Snoop Dogg support) and Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel & David Letterman were all quick to book them for their shows. Filter magazine jumped on board early with a cover feature and Pulse magazine named their self-titled EP #1 in their 2013 round up, as well as the likes of Complex, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, USA Today and Entertainment Weekly all coming on board.
Album opener ‘Nothing But Trouble’ perfectly introduces Sarah’s beguiling soprano vocal, whilst being constantly underpinned by Josh’s gritty production. Moments later, ‘Black Out Days’ drive the listener deep into an intensifying fever dream of echo and atmospherics. Lead single ‘Fall In Love’ (a hit on US and Canadian Alternative and Pop radio since its release) stands tall with its sly hooks and contrasting dynamics – quiet snippets of synthesized strings and isolated vocal passages are layered amidst pulsating bass tones and massive orchestral stabs – it’s a track that was originally written by Josh for a rapper, but on hearing it, Sarah insisted they keep it for themselves. – good call. In good news for us and off the back of their UK release of the ‘Phantogram EP’, the band head to the UK in the coming months for a string of headline shows, which will take in The Great Escape Festival and reach London’s XOYO on the 13th May (sold out in 3 days) and The Oval Space on the 14th - their first UK shows since a mid-tour injury forced the band to cancel sold out shows at Hoxton BK and Heaven last year. The band recently completed another sold out US tour, which included Terminal 5 in New York, winning over new fans at every turn.

May UK Tour Dates:
8/9/10  The Great Escape Festival
10/5                       Ruby Lounge, Manchester
12/5                       Thekla, Bristol
13/5                       XOYO, London (SOLD OUT)
14/5                      Oval Space, London

‘Voices’ Track List:
Nothing But Trouble
Black Out Days
Fall In love
Never Going Home
The Day You Died
Howling At The Moon
Bad Dreams
Bill Murray
I Don’t Blame You
Celebrating Nothing
My Only Friend

‘Voices’ is available to download now in the UK and will be available physically on June 30th via Island Records.

“Phantogram is unlike anything we've ever heard before. They've got a Dilla-like sway to their beats with dreamy vocals and a vibrating low-end.” VIBE
“Packed with elegant tonal flourishes and sweeping electronic excursions… mesmerizing beats which perfectly compliment the raw emotional sentiments layered within the heart of the songs themselves.” The Line Of Best Fit

“Specialise in a mix of spooked-out folk and synth-led R&B, a smart production hybrid… gorgeous” NME

“Phantogram combines sleazy, fuzzed-out synthesisers with pretty, mournful melodies to conjure paradise where the sordid sounds sexy” Filter Magazine

The Free Wheelin Bob Dylan

It's over fifty years since a young Bob Dylan made his way on the now famous "Highway 61" to New York's Greenwich Village. He first performed the iconic "Blowin in the Wind", which he wrote in 1962 at Gerde's Folk City. His debut album "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" came out in 1963. His vast back catalogue is testament to the fact that, over five decades, he has been influenced by every style of music. Bob Dylan and his music were featured in Martin Scorsese's documentary "No Direction Home" which was broadcast simultaneously in the USA on PBS and in the UK on BBC2's "Arena" on Monday 26th and Tuesday 27th September 2005". You can preview the songs from his debut album here. My all time favourite is Girl from the North Country and I love the sweet guitar chords on Oxford Town and Corinna, Corinna

Saintseneca - "Happy Alone"

Anti-Records have just announced the signing of Saintseneca, a young band from Columbus, Ohio led by singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist Zac Little. According to their Bio, the group utilizes a wide range of instruments including violin, mandolin, dulcimer, Turkish Baglama, floor percussion with the more contemporary elements such as synthesizers and electric guitars to create a unique merging of rustic and modern. Folk and country motifs converge seamlessly with soaring vocals and a vibrant post-punk energy. While the group formed in Columbus Ohio,  songwriter Little hails from the rural hills of Appalachia. It is a solitary and dramatic landscape that has infused the band's songs with a sense of introspection and some striking narratives. “I was raised on farms in Appalachia,” Little explains, “And I think that my perspective on music was shaped by where I grew up. It was twenty minutes to see the nearest person. Being so isolated forced me to be introspective and resourceful.  With a diverse list of influences ranging from Animal Collective to Bob Dylan to The Beatles and The Cure, the band's poetic lyricism and folk instrumentation it's no wonder I like this, "Happy Alone" by Saintseneca from the album 'Dark Arc,' out April 1st!
