Owl City Single Release: "Umbrella Beach"

Owl City Single Release: "Umbrella Beach"  Label: Island Records Released: 17th May 2010
It has been a fantastic start to the year for Owl City. His swift and staggering rise from the unknown into chart topping success saw his debut single ‘Fireflies’ top the charts in 18 countries, including the UK where it spent 3 weeks at the No.1 spot and is currently certified gold. His debut album ‘Ocean Eyes’ charted at No.7 and is currently certified silver. The UK has quite clearly joined the rest of the world in tumbling head over heels for Owl City. Young, who counts fellow surrealist Tim Burton in his ever growing list of admirers – so much so that he included his track ‘The Technicolor Phase’ in the soundtrack to Alice in Wonderland – is modestly taking his latest chart topping success in his stride. “It hasn't quite sunk in yet and I suspect it never really will. It's surreal to think that a song I wrote in a basement in the middle of blustery Minnesota has made it as far as it has. Needless to say, I'm completely thrilled.” As Owl City prepares to release ‘Umbrella Beach’, the second single taken from ‘Ocean Eyes’, he will be heading back to the UK to play two additional dates - Glasgow’s Barrowlands and London’s Shepherds Bush Empire on the 8th and 9th May respectively – that were booked as a result of the phenomenal demand for his first ever UK tour back in February and are both nearly sold out! It’s hard to imagine how much better things could get for Adam Young right now. When the shy 23-year-old first uploaded a few synth-pop songs on to his MySpace profile in 2007, his Owl City project was just one of thousands of unknown acts in the web’s worldwide hive of musical activity. Two-and-a-half years and over 50 million MySpace hits later, Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ single hit the No.1 spot on the U.S. Billboard charts in early November 2009. It is the fastest-selling electronic/alternative track of all-time. Its parent album, the self-produced ‘Ocean Eyes’, nestled happily in the U.S. Top Ten following its release last July, and, after confessing that playing his first shows left him with ‘white knuckles’, Adam is now confidently playing sold-out shows to a crowd who, as The NME observed, ‘impressively, know every single word to every single song’ and that ‘squeals and shrieks with the kind of delight usually reserved for buffed-up boy bands’. The shy boy’s dreamy DIY imaginings have become a bonafide pop phenomenon. But even a cursory listen to the gorgeous synthetic gems on ‘Ocean Eyes’ reveals why Owl City has struck such a universal chord. Young has fashioned an elegant and seemingly effortless connection between fashionably arty, retro-nouveau electro-pop and fresh-faced, sweetly melancholic hit factory songwriting. Owl City pop has a purity of purpose – an innocence – that breathes fresh air into the electro-pop revival. “I can't believe how fast things have taken off,” Young marvels. “It seems like it was only yesterday I put a few songs from my first EP online and watched things begin to happen on their own. I never thought music could spread like mine did through the internet. I do know one thing though: I just wanted to keep creating. It's a lot of fun and it's the only thing in the world I'm good at. So it'd be a real shame to stop.” That it would. And this would be the bit where we implore you to watch Owl City make like a bird and fly.

ERYKAH BADU to release her fifth studio album

Universal Motown Records multi-platinum-selling, Grammy-winning singer-songwriter-actress ERYKAH BADU announced via Twitter that she will release her fifth studio album, New Amerykah, Part II: Return of the Ankh, on March 30, 2010. The new album is the singer’s hotly anticipated follow-up to her critically acclaimed 2008 disc, New Amerykah, Part I: 4th World War. In contrast to New Amerykah, Part I: 4th World War, which was digitally produced and political in tone, New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh features lush live instrumentation and taps into Badu’s emotional side by thematically focusing on romance and relationships. “With Part I, I was standing at an apex, looking at what was going on around me politically, socially, and economically,” Badu explained. “With Part II, I’m hovering over me, looking at what’s going on inside of me.” New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh features contributions from some of the most talented, groundbreaking, underground producers and engineers in the hip-hop game, including Grammy winners 9th Wonder and James Poyser, eclectic soul singer Bilal, and the late J Dilla. “We used a lot of analog instruments—harps, strings, drums, piano, and even a Theremin—to give the album that sonic feel,” said Badu. “There’s a strong undercurrent of bottom, a rumbling to these songs that feels good to me. It feels like a hug.” The press is already raving about New Amerykah Part II: Return of the Ankh, one of the most anticipated albums of 2010. The Wall Street Journal’s Speakeasy blog calls it “a throwback to her 1997 debut, ‘Baduizm,’ with a more acoustic feel” while Vibe.com says, “Badu delivers an album that offers the emotional highs, lows and maddening complexities of being involved in a romantic relationship.” Additionally, Okayplayer.com writes, “The album is dope,” and Suite903.com declares, “The new album is beyond amazing.” ERYKAH BADU, a Dallas native, emerged in 1997 with her masterpiece debut album, Baduizm, as a primal force of nature connecting old school soul with contemporary R&B. The album garnered her numerous award nominations, including two Grammys (Best Female R&B Vocal, Best R&B Album) and multiple top spots on critics’ Best-Of-The-Year Lists. In 2000, she followed up with the critically acclaimed platinum-selling album, Mama’s Gun. In 2003, the EP World Wide Underground was awarded Gold certification.

Lil Wayne Featuring Eminem ‘Drop Tha World’

Lil Wayne, 4 x Grammy winning multi-platinum artist, and without question the undisputed hottest rapper in the world releases his second single “Drop Tha World” on April 12th. “Drop Tha World” features fellow hiphop heavyweight Eminem and follows the single “On Fire”, both taken from his new album ‘Rebirth’, released earlier this year. The video for “Drop Tha World” was directed by Chris Robinson (Busta Rhymes, T.I., Ludacris) and captures both stars in a visually amazing War of The Worlds-esque backdrop. A game-changing artist, Dwanye Michael Carter, Jr., aka Weezy F Baby, is one of the most prolific artists in music. Since establishing himself with the Hot Boys and his early solo albums, he became best known for the astonishing amount of music he released whether it be his acclaimed mixtapes, or special guest features on other artists work. The sheer breath, quality and volume of music featuring the New Orleans born rapper, made it difficult to argue against his self-proclaimed title of World’s Greatest Rapper. His position at the very top of the hip hop game was cemented last year. Since the success of Tha Carter III, Wayne has launched his own record label, Young Money Records and already one of his first signings the Canadian born rapper Drake, whose single “Best I Ever Had’”topped the US charts for 5 weeks, is being talked about as THE most exciting new voice in hip hop. 2010 has also seen the launch of Young Money Entertainment’s first release “We Are Young Money”, featuring all the hotly tipped artists on Weezy’s label including Drake and Nicki Minaj.

Paul Weller new Studio Album "Wake up the Nation"

Paul Weller releases his tenth studio solo album “Wake Up The Nation” on April 12th on Island Records. After an unparalleled career, characterised by constant musical experimentation, we should be used to Paul Weller’s relentless desire to chop and change his musical pack. But after the triumphant, Brit-bagging success of 22 Dreams (his third solo number one) Wake Up The Nation album sees rock’s most iconic songwriter come up trumps once more. Lean, mean and as uncompromisingly focused as it’s maker, Wake Up The Nation also brings Paul Weller full circle: twenty-eight years on from The Jam’s split, two tracks feature the former bassist Bruce Foxton. The album also sees contributions from My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields, The Move’s Bev Bevan and legendary session drummer Clem Cattini. Passion, progression, and, as ever, spine-tingling rock’n’roll –Paul Weller has, yet again delivered the perfect soundtrack as we embark on a new decade. Wake Up The Nation’s track-listing:

A double A side single featuring Wake Up The Nation and No Tears To Cry will be released on April 5th. New tour dates will be announced soon. In the interim, Paul plays 5 sold out nights at the Royal Albert Hall from 24 – 28th May.

“The Jackson Sessions”, the debut ep from Lauren Pritchard & Live Dates

“The Jackson Sessions”, the debut ep from Lauren Pritchard, a new artist with a remarkable voice and a rare song-writing talent to match, will be released on May 3rd through Island Records. The EP begins with the captivating “When The Night Kills The Day”. Written by Lauren and Ed Harcourt, the song features Marcus and Ted from Mumford & Sons who were heard and early version and loved the song so much they ended up producing it, their first independent production. The remaining three songs on the EP, “Stuck”, “No Way” and “Bad Time To Fall”, were produced by Eg White, who has produced the bulk of 22 year old Lauren’s debut album “Wasted In Jackson”.  Lauren Pritchard was born and raised in Jackson Tennessee, your archetypal deep south small town USA. She’d always sung and played piano from an early age and when she reached her teens felt the need to move away from her comfortable family surroundings and forge a life in music, somewhere new. At the age of 16, like many young Americans, she headed, alone, to LA. She sang in a reggae band, fell in love, the relationship ended, ran out of money and was on the verge of heading back to Jackson when the mother of Riley, one of her close friends, insisted she move in with them. Riley’s mum is Lisa Marie Presley. Newly invigorated, Lauren lived with them for 8 months during which time she landed a starring role in the highly acclaimed, hard-hitting contemporary musical ‘Spring Awakening’. The show hit the big-time and Lauren moved to New York where she performed on Broadway for two years. With the phenomenal success of “Spring Awakening” and word spreading through New York music business circles about the girl with the incredible voice, Lauren landed a record deal. That partnership didn’t work out so well either and they soon went their separate ways. However as Lauren was finding out as one door closes another opens. During her time at the label she was introduced to the work of Ivor Novello-winning songwriter Eg White. White had heard some of Lauren’s demos and asked to meet her. After a few trips to London, Lauren packed her suitcase and headed off, alone again, to her third big city. Her collaborations with Eg really started producing some amazing songs and before long word was getting out that there was a really special talent emerging who was unsigned with a catalogue of incredible songs. Lauren signed with Island Records in spring this year. The past year has seen Lauren and Eg making the album ”Wasted In Jackson” with some input from Ed Hardcourt and of course Marcus and Ted from Mumford & Sons. Lauren has come a long way in her short years to be here. The hard showbiz lessons learnt during her graft on the stage in New York and on the LA bar circuit - and in the music biz pop factory - have stood her in great stead. And so have her experiences in her small-town hometown.

Pearl and the Puppets to Release "Because I Do" EP 3rd May

Following a packed out Scottish tour, Pearl and the Puppets will release their debut EP ‘Because I Do’ on 3rd May. Pearl, AKA Katie Sutherland and her band The Puppets, have been receiving a steady stream of attention over the last year with performances on the BBC Hogmanay show on New Year’s Eve, sets at T in the Park and the Wickerman Festival along with a headline Scottish tour last month; all this before a single release. Three years ago Pearl was just another music-loving shopgirl and primary school teacher student who was classically trained on woodwind and could bash out a tune on piano. Aged 19, she bought a guitar, taught herself how to play and quickly wrote some songs. Within a matter of months she’d set up a Myspace and posted four demos. Within a week, the first record label contacted her and after signing a publishing deal with Warner Chappell, Pearl decided to abandon her degree at Glasgow University and recruited a band; The Puppets. She signed first to Universal Republic (the US label heard about her and immediately flew over and signed her) and in turn with Island Records in the UK. The Because I Do’ EP is a collection of feel-good summer folk-pop songs that are instantly loveable. Already featured on the Vodafone advert in Australia and New Zealand, title and lead track ‘Because I Do’ is three breezy minutes of melodic acoustic-pop. The video, shot by Vanessa Casswill, perfectly matches the charming nature of the song with Pearl stuck indoors looking out of a window and echoing the songs theme that you love someone no matter what they’re doing. ‘Girlfriend’, ‘Mango Tree’ and ‘Lower Ground’ are all instantly infectious tunes, airborne by Pearl’s effortless way with a melody and bell-clear, Celtic-tinged vocals. At only 22 years old, it’s hard not to be immediately bowled over by Pearl.

GABRIELLA CILMI: Single 'On A Mission' released by Island Records

GABRIELLA CILMI: Single 'On A Mission' released by Island Records on March 8th 2010
Album 'Ten' released by Island Records on March 22nd 2010

Gabriella Cilmi is 'On A Mission'. Just turned 18, the Australian-Italian singer-songwriter is set to surprise a lot of people with her bold, fresh musical direction and feisty attitude: "I'm not a little girl anymore. I've grown up, and I'm ready to fight to get what I want." Gabriella Cilmi was catapulted to global fame by her worldwide mega hit, 'Sweet About Me', which sold over 2 million copies, was top ten in 16 countries, viewed over 20 million times on you tube, spent 37 consecutive weeks in the UK singles chart in 2008 and was recently PRS certified the most played record of the 2009. Gabriella's debut album 'Lessons to be Learned' went top 10 in over 10 countries, notching up close to a million sales. The combination of commercial punch and genuine musical spirit in one so young - Gabriella signed her first record contract at 13 years old - quickly earned Cilmi critical admiration. She won 6 Aria awards in her native Australia (including Best Female, Best Album and Single Of The Year) and was nominated for a host of illustrious awards, including a BRIT, Q, MTV Europe, Ivor Novello and Echo award. Gabriella toured the world extensively, interspersing arena dates with festival appearances, including a Pyramid Stage slot at Glastonbury 2009. Gabriella's teen beauty and powerful voice may have quickly marked her out at the beginning of her career, but there was always a depth and variety about her that hinted at richer, wilder things. With the driving, space age, dance floor anthem 'On A Mission' (with its massive video directed by Michael Gracey), and the fresh direction of forthcoming second album 'Ten', Gabriella Cilmi really comes of age. Inspired by the likes of Giogrio Moroder, Blondie and Donna Summer, she has created a body of work that takes new wave and classic dance influences into poptastic future disco for the 21st century. This coming-of-age theme is present in more than just the beats and costumes. Since she was 'discovered' over five years ago singing Rolling Stones covers at a Fiesta in the suburbs of Melbourne, Gabriella has lived the life of a young, single woman in a city thousands of miles from her home and family. She has been in and out of love, experienced ecstasy and heartbreak, and poured it all into songs like 'Hearts Don't Lie', 'Love Me Cause You Want To', 'Invisible Girl' and 'Surrender'. In addition to working with Xenomania (who produced 'Lessons To Be Learned') on 'Ten', Gabriella Cilmi has also been in the studio with the likes of US Uber producer Dallas Austin (TLC, Gwen Stefani, Michael Jackson), multi-instrumentalist Greg Kursten (Lily Allen, Little Boots, Flaming Lips), and upcoming British production team Invisible Men (Noisettes). The result ? A collection of infectious and inspired belters with beats that will drop on dance-floors either side of the Atlantic and lead vocals made to melt radio airwaves. Gabriella Cilmi is growing up fast. But if her new music is anything to go by, she is having a lot of fun with it. "I've found my inner disco diva" she explains "The whole album is about me becoming an adult, becoming stronger. I want to really switch it on, smother myself in gold paint and transform into someone else. I can't wait to get this show on the road…"

'On A Mission' will be released by Island on March 8th 2010, followed by 'Ten' on March 22nd 2010
