Owl City Single ‘Fireflies’ to be released soon

Owl City Single: ‘Fireflies
to be released 22nd February 2010 on  Island Records

‘Most of my inspiration comes from daydreaming, as I haven't really gone anywhere or done anything. I find a lot of inspiration in imagining what the world would be like if things were different -- better.’
It’s hard to imagine how much better things could get for Adam Young right now. When the shy 23-year-old first uploaded a few synth-pop songs on to his MySpace profile in 2007, his Owl City project was just one of thousands of unknown acts in the web’s worldwide hive of musical activity. Two-and-a-half years and one EP, two albums and over 50 million MySpace hits later, Owl City’s ‘Fireflies’ single hit the No. 1 spot on the U.S. Billboard charts in early November 2009. It had already sold nearly two million copies, been No.1 in the U.S. iTunes chart, and been officially declared the fastest-selling electronic/alternative track of all-time. Its parent album, the self-produced ‘Ocean Eyes’, has nestled happily in the U.S. Top Ten since its release in July, and, after confessing that playing his first shows left him with ‘white knuckles’, Adam is now confidently playing sold-out shows to a crowd who are, as The NME observed, ‘made up mostly of young girls, who, impressively, know every single word to every single song’ and that ‘squeals and shrieks with the kind of delight usually reserved for buffed-up boy bands’. The shy boy’s dreamy DIY imaginings have become a bonafide pop phenomenon, but even a cursory listen to the gorgeous synthetic gems on ‘Ocean Eyes’ reveals why Owl City has struck such a universal chord. Young has fashioned an elegant and seemingly effortless connection between fashionably arty, retro-nouveau electro pop and the kind of fresh-faced, sweetly melancholic hit factory songwriting that you can imagine being sung by X Factor contestants a few years down the line. Let’s be frank – even our favourite 21st century synth-pop has had a hint of raised eyebrow reference-heavy irony. Owl City pop has a purity of purpose – an innocence – that breathes fresh air into the electro-pop revival.
The key, perhaps, lies in Young’s emergence from a non-musical family in Owatonna, Minnesota, a small-town which has no music scene to speak of. Owl City music sounds like a sparkling wintry day in a place full of nature, rather than electronic music’s usual urban nocturnal vibe. It also makes an escapist magic out of an experience shared by all kids raised in small towns – the retreat to the lonely bedroom where one creates a world of adventure to combat the quiet and boredom that surrounds you. As Young sings with such happy anticipation on Fireflies: ‘A fox trot above my head/A sock hop beneath my bed/A disco ball is just hanging by a thread.’ The eternal nightclub of the mind perfectly defined.
So Young is now looking forward to bringing his live show to The UK in February, following November 2009’s release of the warm and witty reinvention of prime Giorgio Moroder that is Umbrella Beach. The tour ties in with the unleashing of the Fireflies phenom on unsuspecting Brits, and the release of the Ocean Eyes album on March 1st – a blissful first-day-of-Spring treat to pull us all out of our winter funk.
‘I can't believe how fast things have taken off’, Young marvels. ‘It seems like it was only yesterday I put a few songs from my first EP online and watched things begin to happen on their own. I never thought music could spread like mine did through the internet. I guess it's just another testament to the power of technology and communication. I do know one thing though: I just wanted to keep creating. It's a lot of fun and it's the only thing in the world I'm good at. So it'd be a real shame to stop.’That it would, and this would be the bit where we implore you to watch Owl City make like a bird and fly!

New Lioness Records single for Dionne Bromfield

“AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH” Release date 21st December
13 year old London-born soul singer Dionne Bromfield, whose sensational debut TV performance on Strictly Come Dancing introduced her as an exciting new talent, has her new Lioness Records single, “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” released on December 21st. The single is a double A-side with Dionne’s festive rendition of Christmas classic “I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus”.
Dionne is the first signing to five time Grammy winner Amy Winehouse’s brand new label Lioness Records, and the single is taken from her recently releaSed debut album “Introducing Dionne Bromfield”.
Speaking about Dionne Amy says, “The first time I heard Dionne sing, I couldn’t believe what I was hearing… such an amazing voice from such a young girl. I’m just so proud of her. I’m very lucky to have a record label. I’ve got all these people that I love, that are really talented – and Dionne is my number one”.
It was at the age of ten that Dionne started to think seriously about singing, after an aunt recognised her potential and referred her to a professional vocal coach. A year later she sang for Amy for the first time and Amy decided there and then that when she started up her own label, Dionne would be her first artist. Citing Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin as well as contemporary artists like Ne-Yo and Beyonce, as influences Dionne quickly decided that she wanted to “keep it soul”.
The album features covers of 12 classic songs that reflect her love of vintage soul music and ‘60s girl groups. Tracks include Mama Said, Motown anthem Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, which Dionne has recorded as a duet with fellow Lioness artist Zalon, Foolish Little Girl, originally a hit for The Shirelles in 1963, and the classic Millie no. 1 hit from 1964,  My Boy Lollipop. In fact Dionne first came across this song when she saw the Spice Girls movie Spiceworld.
“I thought it was a good song,” she says, “but when I heard Millie’s version I thought, this is the proper one. And Amy said, ‘You’ve got to do it – it’s my favourite tune! I’m really happy with my album,” Dionne says, “I love these songs, and I’m really excited about going out and singing them. Once you’re on a stage, it’s like you’re home.”
“She’s so much better than I was at her age” Amy Winehouse
“A properly gorgeous soul voice” Grazia
“Dionne is spectacular…Dame Shirley Bassey’s successor is found at last” The Sun
“A sensation, note-perfect” Daily Mail
“Remarkable…her voice has huge range and character” NME

T'is the Season for Midwinter Graces & Tori Amos

Tori’s First and Highly Anticipated Seasonal Album Midwinter Graces is out now. After nearly two decades writing and recording some of her generation’s most emotionally powerful music, Tori Amos has released her first seasonal album, Midwinter Graces, on Island Records. A follow up to Tori’s critically acclaimed studio album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, Midwinter Graces will find Tori reworking and expanding on classic carols as well as developing some of her very own seasonal tracks. Midwinter Graces is an album that has been in the making for the past 40 years. Raised in the Baltimore area under the watchful eye of her Methodist minister father, Tori grew up playing holiday carols at Sunday services and Christmas Day celebrations in her father’s church. These were the songs that gave a young Tori her first taste of music, and now almost 40 years later Tori gets her own chance to reimagine classics like “What Child, Nowell” and “Star of Wonder.” Tori will also add her own bittersweet bliss to the season with original tracks like “Pink and Glitter” and “Our New Year.” For Midwinter Graces, Amos has again teamed up with long time collaborators Matt Chamberlain on drums, Jon Evans on bass, and Mac Aladdin on guitars. Tori has enlisted the help of a Big Band and an Orchestra with stunning John Philip Shenale arrangements to create Tori’s new seasonal classics.

Codeine Velvet Club Debut Album release date

Double A-side single - “Hollywood” plus “I Am The Resurrection” - December 28th
Debut Album – “Codeine Velvet Club” – December 28th
Codeine Velvet Club, the sensational new band featuring chief Fratelli Jon Lawler and Glasgow chanteuse Lou Hickey, will release a new single to coincide with the release of their eponymously titled debut album on December 28th ‘09. Side A will feature album highlight and 21st century wall of sound masterpiece “Hollywood” while the other Side A will feature Codeine Velvet Club’s unique take on the Stone Roses’ classic “I Am The Resurrection”, a song that the band covered for fun as an encore and has since been recorded because so many fans demanded it!
Codeine Velvet Club is a new musical collaboration that celebrates Jon Lawler and Lou Hickey’s shared love of ’60s girl-boy duets, dramatic orchestral pop, and dark post-war Hollywood romanticism. “With his rough bad-boy edges smoothed off by the velvet hand of Glasgow songwriter Lou Hickey, this camply glamorous, jazzy boy-girl duet is no so much ‘Creepin’ Up The Backstairs’ as swishing down the red-carpeted grand staircase.”NME 7 Nov ‘09
“…it marks a definite departure from The Fratellis’ sound…Hickey’s oft-soft voice drips with a noir-ish menace alongside Lawler’s grizzly barks, a delicious contrast in ‘Vanity Kills’ and ‘Time’.  ‘Hollywood’ encapsulates some of the tuxedoed swagger of The Last Shadow Puppets.  Boosted by jazz-club horns and a boozy, burlesque chorus, it captures the mood of this record perfectly: gritty Brit music tainted by soul-sucking Hollywood.”NME 14 Nov ‘09
“…the equal of The Last Shadow Puppets.  Much of this is down to Jon (Fratelli)’s co-vocalist Lou Hickey, a voluptuously voiced latterday Peggy Lee.”MOJO Dec ‘09
“..this outfit oozes class and a sense of fun that is lacking in many other retro-styles projects”. Glasgow Herald – September 17th
“Codeine Velvet Club are what 2009 has been waiting for”. Glasgow Herald September 17th
“…one of the most exciting records of 2009”. Daily Record September 9th
“an album jampacked with everything from a gospel choir to an orchestra…  Throw in a big band, an electric sitar and – honestly – a cow-bell and you’ve got one of the most exciting records of 2009.”  Daily Record 9th Sept ‘09
“Soaring strings, biting brass, sweet as sugar guitar licks and a healthy dose of noir drama….  Add the kind of retro glamour that conjures up late nights in Vegas or Hollywood, stir in the kind of songwriting that oozes class and sophistication then freight in a few world-beating pop hooks.  That’s the recipe for the sensational new sound of Codeine Velvet.”
News Of The World 13th Sept. ‘09
“A whole album of evocative 1960’s tinged music in a collaboration that might give Isobel Campbell’s collaboration with Mark Lanegan some serious competition” Glasgow Herald 15th Sept. 09
“Codeine Velvet Club – Classic Grand Glasgow 5*   It’s the songs that impress most: Lawler’s post T-Rex pop-rock sensibility married to Hickey’s showtune glamour.  From the opener, the hook-laden ‘Hollywood’, there was hardly a dip in the set that concluded with a sensational reworking of The Stone Roses’ ‘I Am The Resurrection’.  Codeine Velvet Club are what 2009 has been waiting for.”  This may well turn out to be one of those evenings where, if everybody who claims they were there actually was, the venue would have had to be the size of Hall 4 at the SECC! Glasgow Herald 17th Sept ‘09
“They conjure up a Sixties-inspired sound that’s equal parts Phil Spector’s teenage symphonies and John Barry’s sharp 007 soundtracks.” News Of The World 20th Sept. ‘09

‘Following in a line that includes legendary fabulists like Ralph Ellison and Sun Ra and intersects with hip hop via artists like the Wu Tang Clan, Outkast and CuDi's mentor, Kanye West, this Cleveland-raised former film student expands hip-hop's language by exploring the inner life of the inner city the way others focus on the action in the street.’ The L.A. Times

Bombay Bicycle Club re-release "Always Like This"

Having released their critically acclaimed debut album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose’ earlier this year, selling out the London Garage for their album launch show and playing a summer of stand out festival performances including a spellbinding set at Glastonbury, Bombay Bicycle Club are back on the road for a fully sold out UK tour before returning to release their next single. The London based four-piece will re-release live favourite ‘Always Like This’ on November 23rd through Island Records. ‘Always Like This’ was initially released on the band’s own label in April and was the first track from the album to catapult the band into the nation’s conscience and is likely to propel them even higher this time. Celestial vocal loops meet echo chamber guitars and afrobeat rhythms, as Bombay Bicycle Club juggle ecstatic, anthemic melodies with an uncompromised experimental vision. Led by lead singer Jack Steadman’s unique tremulous vocals, ‘Always Like This’ is defined by an irresistible bass led groove, climaxing into a Hot Chip-like 4/4 bass heavy climax. The single will be backed by several remixes including one by the hotly tipped dubstep producer Pariah, who has recently reworked The XX. Additionally, Bombay’s frontman Jack Steadman will be producing The London School of Samba recording a cover of the single for another b-side. The album ‘I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose’ is available now through Island Records.

  • Jack Steadman - vocals, guitars

  • Jamie MacColl - guitars,

  • Suren De Saram - drums

Introducing Dionne Bromfield features covers of 12 classic songs that reflect her love of vintage soul music and ‘60s girl groups. Tracks include “Mama Said”, Motown anthem “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, which Dionne has recorded as a duet with fellow Lioness artist Zalon, and “Foolish Little Girl”, originally a hit for The Shirelles in 1963. The full tracklisting is as follows :

  1. Tell Him
  2. Mama Said
  3. Foolish Little Girl
  4. My Boy Lollipop
  5. Beachwood 45789
  6. Two Can Have A Party
  7. He’s So Fine
  8. With A Child’s Heart
  9. Until You Come Back To Me
  10. Ain’t No Mountain High Enough
  11. Am I The Same Girl
  12. Oh Henry

It was at the age of ten that Dionne started to think seriously about singing, after an aunt recognised her potential and referred her to a professional vocal coach. A year later she sang for Amy for the first time. “I said, ‘You’re an amazing singer’,” Amy recalls. “We also played guitar together, and the way she accompanies herself on guitar is amazing too". Speaking about the songs chosen for the album Dionne explains: “Mostly I listen to Motown – that’s proper music. And these songs I’ve chosen, I just grew up around them. My mum had lots of old Motown LPs, and when you’re brought up listening to something you start singing the way these people are singing. My favourite singer is Marvin Gaye, and Aretha Franklin is amazing as well – she has such a big voice! I also like Ne-Yo very much, I like Beyonce, but I don’t want to go R&B or pop or anything like that. I want to keep it soul.” Amy put Dionne together with Jon Moon, the producer who worked on the deluxe edition of Amy’s ”Back To Black” album and whose credits also include N-Dubz, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens). Backed by Amy’s regular touring band, Dionne recorded a wide variety of songs from the 1960s and early ‘70s: early Tamla Motown favourite Beechwood 45789, a hit for The Marvelettes in 1962; “He’s So Fine”, a US number one for The Chiffons in 1964; “Until You Come Back To Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)”, co-written and originally recorded by Stevie Wonder in ’67 and later covered by Aretha Franklin in 1973; and “My Boy Lollipop”, a UK number one for Millie in 1964, and a song first heard by Dionne when she saw the Spice Girls movie Spiceworld. “I thought it was a good song,” she says, “but when I heard Millie’s version I thought, this is the proper one." And Amy said, ‘You’ve got to do it – it’s my favourite tune!” This is a principle that Dionne is applying to her own song-writing, although she is saving her original songs for the future. Says Amy: “Dionne’s writing all the time. I want her to experience life so that she can write songs. But while she’s doing a covers album she’s not singing all her songs, she’s not so consumed by it. Singing songs that are very personal, it’s very deep. But she knows what she’s doing – to be honest, when I say Dionne’s like my sister, a lot of the time she’s like my older sister! I’m just so proud of her. I’m very lucky to have a record label. I’ve got all these people that I love, that are really talented – and Dionne is my number one.” “I’m really happy with my album,” Dionne says, “I love these songs, and I’m really excited about going out and singing them. Once you’re on a stage, it’s like you’re home."

Breaking News - Taio Cruz Still Number One

Taio Cruz, whose single “Break Your Heart” crashed into the UK singles chart this week at no. 1, firmly establishing the 26 year-old Londoner as a genuine solo artist in his own right, has his hugely anticipated second album, ”ROKSTARR”, released on October 12th through Universal Records. The album features the number 1 smash as well his Top 3 collaboration with Tinchy Stryder “Take You Back”. Special guests on the album will include superhot rising US star Ke$ha and Tinchy Stryder. Written, produced and arranged by the multi-talented Cruz the twelve track set also features “Dirty Picture”, “I’ll Never Love Again”, “Only You”, “Feel Again “and the UK Bonus track “The 11th Hour. Although “Break Your Heart” is his first solo release this year, Taio has already enjoyed an extremely productive and successful 2009. As well as completing work on “Rokstarr”, the follow up to the 150,000 selling debut “Departure”, Taio has been writing and producing for Cheryl Cole’s feverishly anticipated new record, has scored his second number 1 UK single having written the Tinchy Stryder/Amelle smash “Never Leave You”, as well as writing and performing on Tinchy’s earlier top 3 smash “Take You Back”. “Break Your Heart”  is Taio’s first solo release since exploding onto the UK scene with the massive chart smashes ”Come On Girl” and “I Can Be”, both taken from his Gold-selling debut album “Departure”. The critical and commercial success of the singles and album quickly established Cruz as one of the most exciting British artists to emerge in recent years. In the last two years Taio’s writing and production skills have been enlisted by among others the Sugababes, Leona Lewis, Usher, Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, JLS, Anastacia, Alexandra Burke and many more, while Simon Cowell  called Departure “one of the best albums of 2008”. Prior to the release and success of “Departure”, Taio was already a major player in the US with super producer Dallas Austin singling him out as “the new Babyface”. Living and working in the US he had cut his teeth writing and recording with the likes of Tricky Stewart, the man behind Rihanna’s “Umbrella”. In fact the song was originally earmarked for Taio to perform, until Jay-Z heard it, offered it to Rhianna and the rest as they say …. Taio’s transatlantic work continued with the London wunderkind writing & producing for a string of A list artists. Quickly recognised as THE go-to writer/producer in the UK, Taio has since worked with some of the UK’s biggest names while writing and recording aerial for his second album. The success of the number 1 single, whose video has now received an astonishing 1.3 million views on Youtube, and the imminent release of the new album, offers further proof, if proof were needed, that in Taio Cruz, the UK has its very own top–drawer artist/songwriter/producer who can stand shoulder to shoulder with the best that American pop has to offer. Top pop duo the Yeah You’s have just released  their debut album “Looking through You” on Island Records. The Yeah You’s take the unusual step of releasing a greatest hits compilation as their first album release when their eagerly awaited debut album ‘Looking Through You’ is released on  Island Records. The album was written in keyboard player Mike Kintish’s bedroom in London and recorded in LA with Greg Wells (Mika, Katie Perry & Rufus Wainwright). “Game Over" - New Release from V V Brown

‘Soundclashing whirlwind’ V V Brown will release her brand new single “Game Over” on September 21st through Island Records.  V V, whose beautiful debut album ”Travelling Like The Light” has just been released to huge critical acclaim, has had a busy summer wowing festival crowds at Glastonbury, T In The Park, Lovebox, Camp Bestival and Secret Garden Party.  She will also bring her unique brand of exhilarating pop to V Festival in August and Bestival in September. V V first came to the world’s attention after landing an upfront slot on ‘Later With Jools Holland’.  Her performance on the show won her a lot of admirers including Damon Albarn who invited her to perform on his Africa Express adventure in Lagos, which provided inspiration for the song ‘Game Over’.  Says V V: “The Africa Express trip inspired me to get more involved in African music so we experimented with African sounds and beats and came up with a lyric about the ending of a relationship. I got the opportunity to play my new melodica on it as well!” Having been tipped in Vogue, V V is fast becoming something of a fashion darling. She was personally asked to perform during cool designer Ashish’s London Fashion Week show earlier this year and strutted her stuff for Naomi Cambell’s ‘Fashion Relief’.  Her love of fashion has recently led her to set up her own online vintage webstore ‘V V Vintage’ ( and she is collaborating with a dress maker on clothes for the video for the forthcoming single.. Music has always been a massive part of V V‘s life.  The Northampton born, London based artist, writes and produces all her own music.  The eldest of six children, she learned to play the piano, developed her vocals and took classical and jazz piano lessons at a musical arts school which she attended at  weekends.  Early influences included Ruth Brown, Elvis Presley and, just as importantly, the music from Super Marioland.  Travelling Like The Light” is a perfect introduction to the 25-year old’s sound.  In V V‘s world, love sounds like the perfect melody.  Both are difficult to define she says, but both pour out of the songs on her debut album.  It’s about letting out all these ideas I’ve had locked up in my mind,” Brown states.  It’s honest - it’s not about being festooned with £10m diamonds or having perfect hair.

Mumford & Sons Debut Album out soon

Mumford & Sons release their debut album, ‘Sigh No More’ through Gentlemen Of The Road / Island Records on the 5th October 2009. It will be preceded by a new single, ‘Little Lion Man’, on the 28th September. Fresh from a series of acclaimed festival appearances throughout the Summer, Mumford & Sons deliver their eagerly anticipated debut album as one of Britain’s most beguiling young acts in years. Creating a gutsy, old-time sound that marries the magic of Crosby, Stills & Nash with the might of Kings of Leon, the incredible energy of Mumford & Sons draws us quickly into their circle of songs: to the warmth of their stories and to this magical community of misty-eyed men. Since the band formed in late 2007, their primary goal has been to make music that matters. Mumford & Sons are Marcus Mumford (vocals, guitar, bass drum, and tambourine strapped to his left foot and right), Ben Lovett (keyboards), Country Winston (banjo, dobro, electric guitar) and Ted Dwane (bass). By the beginning of this year, the band had already been shortlisted for the BBC Sounds Of 2009 Poll. Making the road their rolling home is what has made Mumford & Sons who they are today. Word spread quickly, from navigating The Thames on a boat from Camden to Oxford, to selling out London’s ICA, by way of SXSW and an American tour, the following was building fast. The live show has since turned into a real spectacle, and a euphoric event. With three limited edition, self-produced EPs under their belt, the band will precede the release of ‘Sigh No More’ with the single, ‘Little Lion Man’ – already acknowledged by Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show as ‘The Hottest Record In The World Today’. This extraordinary debut was produced by Markus Dravs (Arcade Fire, Bjork, The Maccabees), who actively encouraged the band to be more instinctive, to be more themselves, and strengthen their already-powerful musical personality. The album begins with the powerful title track, Sigh No More, a statement of intent that references the romantic language of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing, as the four men sing together in glorious unison: "Love it will not betray you, dismay or enslave you / It will set you free / Be more like the man you were made to be." Amongst darkly reflective tracks such as Thistle & Weeds and ballads like White Blank Page, Winter Winds and Roll Away Your Stone, by contrast, show the band's sprightlier side, the rollicking banjo of the former conjuring up stormy weather that "litters London with lonely hearts"; the latter a fabulous hoedown about a man unsuccessfully filling the hole in his soul. As the album moves on, this fervour never dies. After a wild lashing out in the murderous fable of Dust Bowl Dance, After The Storm arrives, the only track Mumford and Sons wrote in the studio, away from the live stage they knew so well. It stands an incredibly moving final track to an incredibly moving album – the story of a man scared of what's behind and what's before, and creates a considered conclusion to the band’s epic debut album. Mumford & Sons’ live reputation goes before them, and now their incredible debut reveals the extent of their magic and majesty on record. Feel the fire in your belly and the romance in your heart as you listen, let your voice break into rapture – and you too sigh no more. Pre-order "Sigh No More" today
