Island Records release the Original Motion Picture soundtrack to girlhood drama 'ROCKS'

Island Records are proud to announce the release of the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack to the acclaimed girlhood drama ROCKS which opens in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on September 18th. The 30-track album will feature a brand new Ray Blk song "Warriors", written specifically for the film as well as music from among others Jorja Smith, Little Simz, Stefflon Don, Mae Muller, Lola Young and Mabel ft. Not3s. Speaking about her involvement in the film Ray Blk says: "Rocks is such an incredible movie that so many people, myself included can relate to. I love the story of resilience, strength, and friendship and I believe it will resonate with so many young people so I'm really proud to have been a part of this powerful movie."

Uniquely crafted by a majority all-female creative team in collaboration with mostly first-time actors. ROCKS was written by Theresa Ikoko (winner of the Alfred Fagon award in 2015 for her play Girls) and Claire Wilson (Little Drummer Girl, Gangs of London, The Power), and directed by Sarah Gavron (Suffragette, Brick Lane) and associate director Anu Henriques. The lead cast features Bukky Bakray, Kosar Ali, Shaneigha-Monik Greyson, Ruby Stokes, Tawheda Begum, Anastasia Dymitrow, Afi Okaidja and D'angelou Osei Kissiedu.

This core group of British girls, who all come from differing cultural backgrounds including Nigerian, Somali, Polish, Bangladeshi, English and Congolese-Ghanaian, emerged out of extensive workshops in which they generously shared experiences of friendship, their cultures, social media and school life as part of the filmmaking process.
The film follows teenager Rocks (Bakray) who fears that she and her little brother Emmanuel (D'angelou Osei Kissiedu) will be forced apart if anyone finds out they are living alone. With the help of her friends, she evades the authorities and navigates the most defining days of her life. A film about the joy, resilience and spirit of girlhood.

"I had been working on an idea for a film, a love letter dedicated to my sister and other young black and brown British girls, who are often adultised and seemingly hardened, by society and circumstance. As children, many preserve their families and protect the childhoods of their siblings, while remaining beautifully complex wells of joy and love. When I was asked to be a part of the creative team for ROCKS, to make a film about young people, and importantly, with young people, I soon realised this was the richest and safest soil to plant my story, nurtured by the many women who contributed to ROCKS.  - Writer Theresa Ikoko on behalf of the ROCKS creative team.

The film received its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival and subsequent UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival in 2019, both screenings receiving huge critical acclaim

Skip Marley 'Make Me Feel' video (starring Skip Marley, Rick Ross & Ari Lennox) is now LIVE

Skip Marley, who recently made history with his global hit "Slow Down", alongside Grammy© Award-winning artist H.E.R., which reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Adult R&B chart – a first for a Jamaican-born artist, follows up by dropping the video for ‘‘Make Me Feel’. The video which stars Skip, hip hop legend Rick Ross & fast rising R&B songstress Ari Lennox, is now live. WATCH HERE - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KXZOupLJkQ

Both songs feature on Marley’s debut Tuff Gong/Island Records EP, HIGHER PLACE, a 7-track project which is a call to action to Skip's generation, fans, and listeners to inspire people to ascend to a higher place of love and level of consciousness. The project includes new ideas and experiences as well as wisdom that has been passed down through the Marley lineage that Skip likes to call "Marley Mantras." On the release, Skip states, "It is a joy and a blessing for me to share this music with the world. When we say 'Higher Place,' we mean good vibrations. Positivity. Conscious influence of the heart and the mind and the soul. Music with a message is the music we love."

In addition to "Slow Down," and "Make Me Feel" other featured tracks include "No Love" co-written by Sebastian Kole (Alessia Cara) and Trey Campbell (Ella Mai), which Skip worked on with legendary mentor and Miami family friend Betty Wright, who sadly passed away in May. Its gritty reggae vibe samples Wu-Tang Clan’s “Tearz,” a track from their 1993 LP, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). The 7-track EP also contains “That’s Not True,” a collabo featuring Damian ‘Jr. Gong’ Marley (Skip’s uncle) and the opening title track, “Higher Place” which features music legend and Skip’s grandfather, Bob Marley.

In May, "Slow Down," with over 80 million global streams, became the quickest and biggest-streaming song in recent Marley Family history, and elevated Skip to over 200 million global artist streams It was the first time a Jamaican-born artist reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Adult R&B chart. At the same time, Skip became the first Jamaican-born artist inside the Top 15 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart in nearly a decade and a half (since Sean Paul and Keyshia Cole in 2006, “When You Gonna Give it Up to Me”).

The amazing chemistry between Skip and ten-time nominated, two-time 2019 Grammy©-winner H.E.R. performing live together was apparent during the song’s television debut on Fallon, then a show-stopping performance at the NAACP Image Awards in February, and the ABC Good Morning America Summer Concert Series session in June.

Skip has earned critical acclaim from Rolling Stone, Fader, Hypebeast, Vibe, and others. Most recently during the quarantine, Skip has performed acoustic sets for the launch of the Essence Music Monday series, Billboard Live, Global Citizen & World Health Organization and most recently shared the stage with The Wailers, Cedella Marley, Pedró Capó, Rauw Alejandro, Camilo and Kany García for a an opening performance on the 17th Annual Premios Juventud.

ABOUT NOISY. Comprised of singer Cody, guitarist Connor and producer Spencer, the band is the culmination of several years of hanging out at skateparks. They’ve been Noisy for the past year and a half, an 18-month period that’s seen them build a makeshift studio in Spencer’s house and put it to good use: coming up with a name, and then a suitably clamorous sound to follow. They take the spin-the-bottle sensibility of the playlist generation and make something new entirely: the sound of hip hop, D&B, and the eternal swagger of the Happy Mondays rolled into one intoxicating whole. To Noisy’s quote, the band are for all the Friday guys, for all 20-somethings smashing it on a weekend, spending five days aching, and then getting out and doing it again.

(Full track listing below.)  The 7-track project was named Higher Place as a call to action to Skip's generation, fans, and listeners to inspire people to ascend to a higher place of love and level of consciousness.

Fans also have the chance to hear Skip on an exclusive acoustic performance of Bob Marley's 'One Love' as part of Island Records & 1Xtra's Jeremiah Asiamah Bank Holiday Carnival livestream. To help celebrate what would have been, the event was live streamed from 1-7pm, Monday August 31st, on Jeremiahasiamah.com.

In addition to "Slow Down," which has amassed over 80 million streams, HIGHER PLACE includes "Make Me Feel" featuring fellow Miami hitmaker Rick Ross and R&B songstress Ari Lennox.  The track is highlighted by Ross's effortless flow and Lennox's sweet and soulful melodies, as she sings "let's make this a good life even through the bad times," a mantra that resonates loudly today.  Other featured tracks include "No Love" co-written by Sebastian Kole (Alessia Cara) and Trey Campbell (Ella Mai), which Skip worked on with legendary mentor and Miami family friend Betty Wright, who sadly passed away in May.  Its gritty reggae vibe samples Wu-Tang Clan's "Tearz," a track from their 1993 LP, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).  The 7-track EP also contains "That's Not True," a collabo featuring Damian 'Jr. Gong' Marley (Skip's uncle) and the opening title track, "Higher Place" which features music legend and Skip's grandfather, Bob Marley
